One recurring theme in environmental thought is the role of tech, whether or not we can engineer our way through environmental chaos. Specifically, many of our solutions today focus on resource efficiency. If we could make it a lot less energy intensive to refrigerate one weeks worth of food, theoretically we would be consuming less energy. Yet, as explained by the Jevons Paradox, that is not always the case...
Technology is a band aid, not a cure. Resource efficiency is critical, yet if we allow the lowered production cost to simply result in more production, we will just end up running on a treadmill.
There are many resources on the rebound effect, but specifically to this debate over energy efficiency, I found this article particularly insightful : https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2010/12/20/the-efficiency-dilemma
